Volunteer

Volunteering provides the opportunity to help people and worthy organizations in the region, helping you to grow and develop as a person and as a professional. Volunteer opportunities are a great way to meet new people, those who share your interests and concerns, and network and make new friends. When committing to be a volunteer, you have the ability to choose what really interests you and who (or what) is most deserving of your time.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities:

Wednesday, August 18 ~ United Way Day of Caring
Team up with Buffalo 360 and United Way's Emerging Leaders' Society for an All Day Service Event.  Details coming soon!

The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County offers many volunteer opportunities.  Click here for their list of Summer Volunteer Opportunities.  If you want your company to get involved in the community, check out their Corporate Volunteer Program here.

Become a Big Brother or Big Sister Mentor!
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported mentoring relationships.  Being a volunteer "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things you will ever do. You and your “Little” will create a number of wonderful memories sharing activities you both enjoy. It’s rewarding to know that the time you volunteer, can have a BIG impact in the life of your Little.  We realize that every volunteer’s life and commitments are different. That is why we offer two options for getting involved as a Big Brother or Big Sister.
The Community-Based Program allows you to share activities with a child 2-3 times a month for a few hours each time. This time could be shared afternoons, evenings or on weekends. You and your Little decide.  Your time together might include bike riding, making dinner, helping with a school project, visiting a local museum or attending a local sporting event.  The agency will provide a Case Manager to make all of the initial introductions.  The Case Manager will continue to keep in touch to lend support and help your friendship grow. We also offer a number of group activities and freebies, like tickets to local events, for you & your Little to enjoy!
The Site-Based Mentoring Program volunteers meet with their Little at a City of Buffalo school or community center from 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM, one day a week.  This is a chance to build and share a friendship in a structured setting.  Matches will enjoy a variety of educational, recreational, cultural and community service projects planned by a BBBS staff coordinator.
To discuss our volunteer opportunities or to schedule a volunteer interview, you can contact the Community Relations Department at 716/873-5833 ext 25 or complete an interest form at: www.beafriend.org

Mentors needed!
Be a part of the revitalization of the West Side and use your people skills! The West Side Bazaar, a project from the Grant Street Stakeholders group, is looking for people who are interested in serving as volunteer mentors for ambitious West Side residents hoping to open their micro enterprises in the Bazaar next June.

There is no specific business experience needed, just a desire to see our entrepreneurs succeed. The Vendor Relations Committee will provide you with training and all of the materials and assistance you need to help your new business owner. The time requirement will vary throughout the process but will never be excessive and you will be backed up the whole time by the committee. Call Bonnie Smith at 870-6843 to ask questions about volunteering for this important mission.

Build Your Community and Your Resume!
Looking for a volunteer experience? Build your resume and sharpen your public speaking and group management skills by volunteering for Junior Achievement of WNY! When you work with a JA school, you are changing the lives of children, as well as making a difference in the community in which you live or work.

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization that places volunteers in local classrooms to help students learn about business and the importance of staying in school. JA programs focus strongly on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness. JA staff provide training, lesson plans, materials and support to guide participants through the volunteer experience. Volunteers choose the grade level and subject matter, and are placed in a classroom that is close to home or work. The time commitment is minimal – less than an hour for five to eight weeks – but the impact is monumental!
To learn more about Junior Achievement, visit http://wny.ja.org or contact Alycia Ivancie at 716-853-1381 x15 or Shannon Bloomquist, x16.
